Who Is Paddy McGuinness?

Patrick Joseph McGuinness is one of the most familiar faces — and voices — on British television and radio. Across three decades he has moved from Peter Kay sitcoms to Saturday-night dating shows, from the Top Gear test track to the Question of Sport studio, and from stand-up stages to a Sunday slot on BBC Radio 2. As of October 2026, he remains a regular BBC presenter while also touring as a stand-up comedian.

Where Is Paddy McGuinness From?

McGuinness was born in Farnworth, Lancashire, on 14 August 1973, the son of Irish parents from County Tipperary; his mother Patricia worked as a cleaner and barmaid. He attended Mount St Joseph High School in Farnworth, where he formed the close friendship with fellow Bolton comedian Peter Kay that would shape his career. Before comedy, he worked for seven years at Horwich Leisure Centre, as a manager, lifeguard and then fitness instructor. He told his story in his 2021 autobiography, My Lifey.

How Did Paddy McGuinness Become Famous?

Peter Kay gave McGuinness his break, casting him in That Peter Kay Thing (2000) and then as doorman Paddy in the much-loved sitcom Phoenix Nights (2001–2002). The double act continued with the Channel 4 spin-off Max and Paddy’s Road to Nowhere (2004), in which Kay’s Max and McGuinness’s Paddy toured Britain in a camper van. McGuinness also built a parallel career in stand-up, and would later tour four solo shows, including The Dark Side Tour (2006) and Daddy McGuinness (2015–2016).

Take Me Out: The Show That Made Him a Household Name

In 2010 McGuinness became the host of ITV’s dating show Take Me Out, presiding over the “Flirty Thirty” and a parade of hopeful single men with his catchphrase “No likey, no lighty.” The show ran until 2019 and turned him from a comedy-circuit favourite into a primetime fixture, a run that also included game shows such as 71 Degrees North and, later, Catchpoint and the BBC’s I Can See Your Voice (2021–2022).

What Happened With Top Gear and A Question of Sport?

Announced in October 2018, McGuinness joined Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff and Chris Harris as the new Top Gear presenting team, making their debut together in June 2019. The trio were credited with reviving the programme. Production was halted after Flintoff was seriously injured in a crash at the show’s Dunsfold test track in December 2022, and in November 2023 the BBC told PA Media it had decided to “rest the UK show for the foreseeable future,” while remaining committed to all three presenters. As of October 2026, the BBC has announced no return date or new presenting line-up for the show, and McGuinness has not been announced as part of any future series.

In 2021 he also succeeded Sue Barker as host of the BBC’s A Question of Sport, with team captains Sam Quek and Ugo Monye. The BBC halted production in 2023 after two series with McGuinness in the host’s chair.

Like Phillip Schofield, another presenter who fronted flagship British programmes for two decades, McGuinness has had to rebuild his schedule more than once as long-running shows have ended around him.

What Is Paddy McGuinness Doing Now?

As of October 2026, McGuinness’s regular home is BBC Radio 2, where he has presented the Sunday 11am–1pm show, broadcast from Salford, since June 2024. On television, he joined BBC Two’s Inside the Factory for its 2024 Christmas special, taking over as the programme’s main presenter from Gregg Wallace alongside Cherry Healey and Ruth Goodman.

He hosted the first two series of Channel 4’s reality competition Tempting Fortune (2023 and 2025), in which contestants trek through the wilderness while resisting expensive temptations that eat into a shared prize fund. In December 2025 he announced he was stepping down from the show, telling The Sun he was “happy to be passing the baton on,” citing other commitments and family time; Rob Beckett was named as the host of the third series, and a Channel 4 spokesperson thanked McGuinness for bringing “his trademark humour to both series.”

His other recent work includes the BBC travel series Paddy and Chris: Road Tripping (2024) with his former Top Gear colleague Chris Harris, and an episode of Who Do You Think You Are? (2024), in which he traced his Irish family roots. He also returned to stand-up with Nearly There, his first tour in eight years — 40 dates across the UK and Ireland running from October 2024 into 2025, including a night at the London Palladium.

The Children in Need Ride: 300 Miles on a Raleigh Chopper

In November 2024, McGuinness took on the Radio 2 Ultra Endurance Cycle Challenge for BBC Children in Need. As the BBC press release for the challenge explained, he would cycle through three nations and eight counties, starting in Wrexham on Monday 11 November and aiming to finish in Glasgow on Friday 15 November — not on a racing bike, but on a modified Raleigh Chopper, the 1970s children’s bike he had envied as a boy. He named the bike Patch, and it was painted in the colours of Pudsey, the Children in Need mascot.

The route took him from Wrexham AFC’s Racecourse Ground through Flintshire, Cheshire, Merseyside and Lancashire — including the gruelling Lake District climb of Shap Fell — and on through Cumbria and Dumfriesshire into Scotland. Sir Chris Hoy, who had helped him train, joined him for part of the journey, and Scottish philanthropist Sir Tom Hunter pledged through the Hunter Foundation to match donations up to £3 million. McGuinness reached BBC Scotland’s Pacific Quay headquarters in Glasgow at around 10.30am on Friday 15 November, where the total stood at £7,556,853 — already far beyond his original £1 million target.

The total kept climbing. It reached £9.12 million by his Sunday Radio 2 show, and on the Monday morning it was announced on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show that the challenge had raised £9,254,482 (PA Media). Donations kept arriving after the appeal, and in December 2024 McGuinness announced that the final total had reached £10.5 million — passing the £10 million mark at which he had promised to get a tattoo of Patch, the bike (one Radio Times report put the final figure at £10.3 million; £10.5 million is the total McGuinness himself announced and the most widely reported). McGuinness told PA the experience had been “life-changing,” describing himself as “absolutely physically broken” but “the happiest person around.” A BBC documentary, Paddy: The Ride of My Life, followed the challenge.

Family, Autism Advocacy and Life After His Separation

McGuinness married Christine Martin in 2011, and they have three children: twins Leo and Penelope, and a younger daughter, Felicity. All three children have been diagnosed with autism, something the couple have spoken about publicly in order to raise awareness.

In December 2021, BBC One broadcast Paddy and Christine McGuinness: Our Family and Autism, an hour-long documentary following the family as they met other parents, experts and autistic people. During filming, Christine herself received an autism diagnosis, which she discussed openly in the programme and in her book. The documentary was nominated in the Authored Documentary category at the 2022 National Television Awards.

In a joint statement on 22 July 2022, the couple announced that they had separated, saying they had taken “the difficult decision to separate” a while earlier and that “our main focus as always is to continue loving and supporting our children.” They asked for privacy and said they would make no further comment at the time.

As of October 2026, the on-record position is this: the divorce was finalised in October 2024, as Christine McGuinness has herself discussed in podcast interviews, and both have said publicly that they continue to share the family home in Cheshire and co-parent their children, an arrangement Christine has described as working well for the children’s stability. Beyond their own public statements, this article does not speculate about either of their private lives.
